PA155. Thinking Critically: Tradition Versus Modernity in Salih’s DoumTree

Abstract

Critical thinking, an important skill to be cultivated in teaching, enables self-motivation and autonomy in learners. Using Tayeb  Salih’s story  The Doum Tree of Wad Hamid,( taught on the EES Advanced Writing course at LC , SQU ), the paper illustrates how  teaching students  skills of analysis , interpretation,  and  evaluation of the content and language of a literary text and questioning the ideologies embedded within it, could enable critical thinking through literature.
