PA175. From Authoritarian to Authoritative: How Far Teachers Are?

Abstract

This paper investigates the perceptions of students' English self-concept in relation to their  English teachers' teaching styles (authoritative and authoritarian). The participants were  210 Omani tenth graders. The researcher used Self-Definition Questionnaire (Marsh, 1988) to examine self-concept while Teacher Authority Questionnaire was used to assess teaching styles.  The findings show high levels of English self-concept, low levels of authoritative style and moderate levels of authoritarian style. Teaching styles were found to affect self-concept.
