PA220. Teacher Qualities: Do they Matter? Learners'/Teachers' Perceptions

Abstract

The study explores Omani students' and teachers' perceptions of the significance of teacher qualities. The teacher qualities highlighted by the study are of five types. They are grouped as content knowledge about teaching and learning, pedagogical knowledge about teaching/learning, knowledge about oneself (i.e. general characteristics, affective variables and professional development), knowledge about students and knowledge about classroom management. Relevant notions in the literature, implications and challenges will also be raised in the paper presentation.

Jamila is an assistant language lecturer at the Language Centre, SQU. She has taught different types of EFL learners. She holds an MA in applied linguistics from the University of Queensland. Her main interests are learning, language skills and culture.

Dr. Rahma Al-Mahrooqi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English, Sultan Qaboos University, Oman. She holds a BA in English Education, an MA in English Curriculum and Teaching Methods and a PhD in English and Communications Education. Her research interests focus
on English language teaching with special emphasis on reading and literature, intercultural and cross-cultural communication.
