Presentation title

PA90. Helping EFL Students Comprehend Linguistic Landscapes

Abstract

The presentation proposes the integration of linguistic landscapes, i.e., use of language in the environment, in teaching English to students studying abroad. They cover directions, names of places and ads. The instructor introduces the linguistic landscape, overviews difficult vocabulary, grammatical structures and gives pre-questions. Contextual clues and background knowledge are used to infer the meaning of difficult words and the whole linguistic landscape. Students may identify their syntactic, pragmatic and sociolinguistic features.
