WS67. Exploring Students' Hidden Selves in a Foreign Language

Abstract

As we witness a proliferation of English-medium schools and universities in the Middle East, it seems important to ask how foreign langauge education affects the burgeoning subjectivity of the learner. The field of ELT seems to allocate little attention to how the recreation of the self (past and present) in the foreign language can affect the learner's pscyhe, affective well-being or developing academic identity. Symbolizing the familiar aspects of self in a foreign language can be alienating and even traumatic, but conversely may also open new possibilities (both personal and academic) for agency and creativity. Can writing provide a map?
